Foodchain 08/21/03

ALL'S FAIR...Spent a bit of time last week at the Monterey County Fair tooling around the food pavilion. It was a regular mini-food network of activity with numerous chef demonstrations performed throughout each day and all week. The pavilion was hosted by Clementine's Kitchen, the great year-old store in Del Rey Oaks next to Tarpy's.

Clementine's, which is known for its wonderful tools and accoutrements, plus its informative cooking classes, has now raised the bar even higher. The dynamic duo of owners David Babcock and Drew Chernoy are expanding next door, adding 30 feet of space. In addition, they are partnering with Jon Lusseau of Parker-Lusseau in Monterey, to add more breads, baked goods, in-house food service, etc. I'm stoked about the direction Clementine's is heading; check it out.

The chef demos at the Fair were outstanding, with such local luminaries as the aforementioned David Babcock (graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, former instructor at California Culinary Academy), Pacific Edge's Rick Edge, Montrio's Tony Baker, Kurt Grasing of Grasing's and The Chop House, Hollister's home-cooking TV hootchie mama Dorothy McNett, Hullaballoo's Todd Fisher, Chart House's Greg Harris, James Waller from The Duck Club, Jason Wright from Bahama Billy's, Jeffrey Thompson from Jeffrey's Grill, Joe Solis of Good Time Catering, Jean Hubert of The Food Fellas, Pamela Burns from Wild Plum Cafe, Susan Shaw of The Chocolate Dipper, Monterey Marriott's Damon Simmons, Clementine's Glenn Hoekstra and the man who started it all off on Tuesday at noon, Bruce Silverblatt from Forge in the Forest.

The set-up was just like a real cooking studio with the overhead mirror and an enthusiastic crowd enjoying top-notch performances. It's great to see how many talented culinary professionals we have here in our area and also how much interest there is in cooking techniques and food preparation by the folks out in society. We've come a long way since James Beard and Julia Child first started introducing home viewers to the joys of cooking good food--it's been some trip.
